It was, naturally, a bleak time for Gotham City. The recent times sent many people into poverty, and others into hiding. And with the threats of terrorism coming up each and every night, it didn't seem as though it was going to stop anytime soon.
But today was, probably, one of the worst nights to live in Gotham City. That night, Arkham Asylum lay in ruins as it's prisoners flood the much more advanced Narrows of Gotham. Many of them having stories to tell. Many of them making stories to tell.
Though there were ...celebrities, among them, they were more known for what they did wrong than what they did right. Legendary foes of Gotham's most famous protector, they all had reasons to attack the city that held them for so long from the rest of the world.
Clayface hadn't aged a day. His form wasn't limited to that.
Poison Ivy had mutated to even more of a plant than originally thought possible. She was now one with the earth she loved to much. Unfortunatley, when it came to the people living on it, All she had to show was hatred.
And Man-Bat, the son of the original two Bat-creatures accidentally created by Doctor Kirk Langstrom, screeched into the night, leaving many in terror, and others looking for salvation.
And it was coming. With the speed of a demon, a figure flew over the chaos, taking to the rogues without fear nor hesitation. To Poison Ivy and Man-Bat, the object was unfamiliar. And with good reason... They had been kept isolated for much too long to know of what it was.
But Clayface knew it, all too well. This was his second escape in the last ten years. The last time he had fought his legendary opponent, He had upgraded his arsenal. But what Clayface found so astonishing about this was the fact that his opponent was believed dead, the last time he had checked. But it was heading right towards him. He was heading right towards them.
Clayface watched with wide eyes.
"The... The Batmobile?!"
Poison Ivy turned, hearing this.
"Impossible! He's believed to be dead, isn't he?!"
"Hey, we've been cut off from the world for the last ten years, haven't we? Maybe he came back!"
"NO! I will NOT allow him to bring me back to that Hellhole! HE WILL NOT CONDEMN ME!"
"Don't have to tell me twice!"
Above them, Man-Bat soared, heading straight for the Batmobile. The creature growled, showing it's hideously deformed teeth as it prepared to attack the airbourne vehicle. But, to it's dismay, the driver had already seen the attack coming, and shot out a missle equipped with electrical nets. Within seconds, Man-Bat was trapped, ready for his apprehension.
Behind Poison Ivy and Clayface came one of the more... recent threats to Gotham City. Shriek.
"Step back, amatuers. Let me show you how it's done."
Poison Ivy turned, with rage.
"Amatuers?! You're talking to two of the most legendary criminals Gotham has ever seen!"
Shriek, however, didn't respond with a taunt. Why? Because he couldn't hear Poison Ivy. He was deafened. Looking up, Shriek fired a shockwave at The Batmobile. The moment it hit, The Batmobile stopped. Not due to the blast... but on it's own. It hoved above the three criminals.
"I know you're in there! Come and face me, coward! I'll show you who really owns this city!"
For a minute, all was silent. Then, Shriek screamed in pain as two sharp objects flew from the air, and into his technologically advanced suit, shattering it on impact. Poison Ivy's eyes grew wide, realising what they were. Batarangs.
"We have to get out of here!"
"You kiddin'? I've been waiting for my chance to get back at this guy for years! I'm not backin' down!"
Inside the vehicle, A figure smirked, watching this from a monitor equipped in the massive car.
Your mistake.
Moments later, He emerged, flying from the bottom of it, and landing on the ground, with his wings spread. Clayface smiled evilly, seeing his opponent infront of him.
"Been a long time..."
Clayface's hand turned into the blade of an axe.
"BATMAN."
Batman stood infront of the two rogues. To them, he was looking at old aqquaintences. To him... They were new. He wasn't the same Batman they had faced... But he had known about them, from studies. And that was good enough.
He sneered.
"Poison Ivy. Clayface. You're both going back.", He said.
Clayface smirked.
"To what?", Clayface said, indicating the smoking ruins of Arkham Asylum.
"To Hell.", Batman responded, leaping at Clayface. Clayface formed a brick wall on his chest, and sent it forward, hitting Batman in mid-air. Batman tumbled back to the ground, but managed to land on his feet. He sneered at Clayface.
Okay, I know this guy has a weakness. Bruce told me about it. What was it? Air? Fire?
Clayface laughed.
"Has it really been that long, Bats? You're losing your touch!"
Batman looked at his enviroment. The answer had to be there. Then, Batman spotted it... A fire unit. The replacement of the now horrendously outdated fire hydrant. Batman snapped fingers, in his mind.
Of COURSE. Water... The decomposition of clay. Guess that's what I get for sleeping through High School Physics all of those years...
Unleashing an expanding Batarang with a snap of his fingers, Batman threw it at the unit, cutting it in two. The unit exploded, sending water shooting right at the horrified Clayface. After about a minute of being pelted with the water, Clayface's entire body broke down, leaving him reduced to a puddle, and also ready for apprehension.
Batman smirked.
"Not really. I'm just reinventing my style."
He turned to Poison Ivy. For a minute, the two stared at eachother. Ivy in fear, Batman in anger. Finally, Ivy ran, knowing full well she couldn't do anything without the use of some kind of plant. Batman sent a Bat-Bola towards her, wrapping her legs together and sending her crashing to the ground.
As Batman watched the police arrive, He then remembered something. Swinging his arm back, Batman connected his fist to Shriek's jaw, right before Shriek could make an attack. Shriek's helmet shattered on impact, leaving him out cold.
Feeling as if he had done enough, Batman leaped into the air, and shot up, with the use of his rocket boots, before getting back into the Batmobile and rocketing off.
He couldn't help but feel there was more to be done... But it had to be for another night. At least, He hoped.
* * *
"You said you'd be home earlier."
Batman grimaced. His wife worried about him, and He understood why... But he was getting sick of making her worry to begin with.
"Dana, you know how much I wanted to be there, But-"
"-But, Arkham was destroyed. I know. But you also said-"
"-That I'd take a break and let the police handle more of this. I know. I'm sorry. But I can't just sit back and watch all of this happen... You know I can't."
"The police force has grown since you became Batman, Terry. They're capable of handling more these days. Why can't you let them?"
"Because... It... It's not what he would've done."
"You're not him. Even he knew that."
Batman sighed. She was right, of course. But Batman was Bruce Wayne's son... Maybe that part of him was inherited.
"I'll try to be home as soon as I can."
"You're sure?"
"...No. But I'm going to try the best I can. That's all I can promise."
There was a pause on the other line, as The Batmobile rocketed deeper into Gotham City.
"Alright."
Batman felt a sense of relief escape his mind.
"I love you."
"Love you too..."
And they were disconnected. It's not as if Batman wanted this... He just knew that he had to be prepared for when the police couldn't be there in time.
Before anything else could be said or thought, Batman's eyes widened as he saw something in the skies infront of him. A sight that probably hadn't been seen in over twenty years.
"Now that's interesting..."
Taking little to no chance, Batman piloted the Batmobile to the signal's origin. There was still work to be done.
As Bruce would say... 'The War Goes On'.
Joy.
