The Bat-signal blazed across the top of Police Headquarters. It was the first time in years that had happened. Hundreds of people looked to the skies in between hiding from the street gangs in order to see the rather 'historical' event.
Commisioner Barbara Gordon was a year away from retirement. She hated it, naturally. It was a part of her that was inherited by her late father, the legendary Commisioner James Gordon. However, She was planning on taking her last year out with a bang. She wasn't retired yet.
Batman knew this aswell. He had always found a certain level of respect for her, even when they barely knew eachother, back with Terry was starting out. Now, though, the two shared a relationship akin to both of their predecesors. This, however, was a surprise to even Terry.
Floating above the rooftop, from the Batmobile, Batman landed on the ledge.
"Cute. But you could've called, you know.", Batman said, as Barbara turned.
She grimaced.
"Desperate times call for desperate measures, McGinnis. Besides... I was tired of seeing it collect dust.", Gordon said.
"I'm guessing there's another reason.", Batman responded, jumping down from the ledge.
Barbara reached into her pocket, and pulled out an evidence bag.
"Some of our favorite clowns have been getting upgrades, it seems.", She announced, handing the bag to Batman, who immediatley began examining it.
Inside were two encased objects. The first item was a trademark 'Joker' card, originally used by the legendary criminal, now used by what Terry referred to as 'the wannabes' Jokerz Gang. The second was a metal part.
Batman looked up, after seeing that. Even with the entire cowl covering his face, His expression was an obvious look of confusion.
"It's apart of an experimental weapon used by the military. While I couldn't pry much information regarding it, I did manage to find out where it came from. A certain company under your wing.", Barbara said, sternly.
Batman didn't even make an expression to that.
"If you're referring to Wayne Enterprises, I don't work there. Bruce gave his shares away before he died, if you remember.", Batman responded.
"Either way, you have ties to it. And those ties could be beneficial to this investigation. Not to mention... well... certain skills, on your end.", Barbara said, with a smirk.
"So you're suggesting that I use those ties to find out who's selling the weapons to The Jokerz?", Batman asked.
"No. But... Having ties could possibly lead to you having certain access to some areas. Remember, the locks these days are controlled by DNA. And... considering half of your DNA belongs to the company's former CEO... It would be nice if, oh... Someone went to look around.", Barbara continued, discreetly.
Batman paused. She was right.
Guess I'm paying Wayne Enterprises a little visit.
Batman eventually nodded.
"I get the message.", Batman said, turning around.
"Oh, and by the way, How's Dana these days?"
Batman stopped, turning around, with a raised eyebrow. Barbara shrugged.
"It's called smalltalk, Kid.", Barbara said, with another smirk.
Batman turned around.
"She's... fine. Sam?"
"Great. Aside from the assaination attempts."
Batman turned back around.
"You've been talking to Oracle again, haven't you?"
"Maxine Gibson? What would ever give you an idea like that?", Barbara asked.
Batman turned around, yet again, getting on the ledge.
"She's told you about how I've been trying to distance myself from Bruce, hasn't she?"
"It's understandable. When I was Batgirl, we all wanted to be our own hero. It wasn't our faults we were following in the footsteps of a legend.", Barbara said.
Batman crossed his arms.
"And the smalltalk. It was to see how much like Bruce I really am?", Batman asked.
"You're reaction is proving it more and more."
"I'm not following a legacy."
Batman then leapt off the building, and into the night. Barbara watched as The Batmobile cruised into the skies above. She sighed.
"That's what we all thought, McGinnis."
